Wellness, History, and Culture in the Dominican Republic: An Off-The-Beaten-Path Paradise

When most people think of the Dominican Republic, they think of the main resort area of Punta Cana or the cruise port, Puerto Plata.  But there is so much more to this geographically diverse country. I was recently lucky enough to experience a side of the DR that is off-the-beaten-path and full of history, culture, relaxation and rejuvenation.

First Stop: Santo Domingo

My trip began in the capital, Santo Domingo. Founded in 1498, this is the oldest European-established settlement in the Americas. The historic area of this city, known as the Colonial Zone, is a UNESCO World Heritage site full of centuries-old architecture, quaint cafes, cobblestone streets, authentic restaurants, and local art galleries. We explored this area on a guided bike tour through Zona Bici Bike Rentals and Tours. Our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about his culture and homeland. It was an absolute treat learning about the history and modern culture of this area from his perspective.

Next Stop: Paradise

Upon finishing an authentic lunch in the Colonial Zone, we hopped in our private transfer for a 2-hour ride to the northern coast. Our destination- Cayo Levantado Resort. Located on a secluded island, this high-end, all-inclusive haven is accessible only by boat. Here you will find a special place dedicated to the preservation of local culture, sustainability, and holistic wellness. Its innovative wellness concept, with spaces and programs dedicated to health, fitness and self-care, are the cornerstone of your experience here. Four Wellness Paths- Relax, Refresh, Renew and Restore- allow you to create a personalized journey to nurture your mind, body, and spirit.

This resort truly provides an unparalleled experience from the moment you arrive until the time you leave. I could go on and on about how magical this place is, from the breathtaking scenery, elevated food and drink programs, top-notch wellness activities, and unique cultural experiences. Every detail of this place reflects opulence, excellence, and authenticity. Instead, I will provide you with examples so you can see for yourself. I left feeling renewed and refreshed and can’t wait to go back.

·  Every room comes with your own personal Ambassador, who is dedicated to meeting all your needs. Example of service: upon arrival to my room, my Ambassador had heated up water for me in case I wanted to have a hot tea before bed. They literally think of everything to make your stay more comfortable.

·  Special treats were provided each evening. One evening there were cassava chips with a card explaining the cultural significance of this vegetable. This was a neat treat given that we had taken a Yucca class that day where we were taught how to process yucca and make cassava cakes.

·  Upscale bath products are provided including a heavenly sugar scrub.

·  The in-room mini-bar is stocked with not only drinks and glass jars of cold water but also local chocolates and resort-made protein bars. The peanut butter protein bar was incredible. I literally ate 4 bars in 3 days.

·  The four wellness pathways are tied into the restaurant’s menu at Yucca, their slow-food concept, as well as the spa’s hydrotherapy circuit. You can literally pick the wellness path you want to take and pair your food or spa experience to it.

·  Inventive and delicious cocktails AND mocktails. The detoxing lemon ginger shot was just what I needed to start each day.

·  The restaurant, Senda, takes you on a culinary journey where each course portrays a different geography of the country.

·  On my day of departure, I had to leave early in the morning so my Ambassador made me a bagged lunch to take with me to the airport. They literally think of everything.

So as you can see, all of these small details add up to make a unique, top-notch experience. For more information about this resort or to plan your own trip, reach out to me anytime at rachel@osworldtravel.com.
